Although FOX Bet, a mobile sports wagering platform, has halted accepting wagers in New Jersey officially starting on July 31 as its owner Flutter Entertainment wants to close the sportsbook due to low market share, the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), New Jersey’s gambling regulator, still isn’t done with the aforementioned sportsbook yet, fining it $80.000 for taking bets on in-state college sports teams.

Wagering on in-state college sports teams isn’t permitted in New Jersey in addition to 12 additional states. This could have been changed in November 2021, when state’s voters had the opportunity to vote to lift the ban. However, that didn’t happen, as 57% of the said voters voted for the ban to remain.
Additionally, in Illinois the aforementioned betting is permitted even though it’s limited to in-person wagering only.

The state regulator first submitted a complaint against the mobile sportsbook more than two years ago, listing that the “sportsbook accepted bets from within the state of New Jersey on a Feb. 13, 2021, college basketball game between Rutgers and Northwestern.” Over a year later, it submitted a second complaint stating that “the sportsbook took action on a Monmouth University basketball game against Lehigh on Nov. 16, 2021.” Also, two additional complaints were submitted, the first regarding the Fairleigh Dickinson vs St. Francis basketball game on Dec. 31, 2021, and the second regarding the Seton Hall vs the University of Connecticut game on Jan. 8, 2022.
Moreover, on Friday, August 18, the regulator issued an order to the aforementioned mobile sportsbook to pay $80,000 for the violations.
